In true Texas fashion, reminiscent of the Old West, the weekend was full of memories - both old and new! The "Burning of the Brands" was held on Friday night, with each honoree's ranching brand burned for posterity on the fence of the Haley Library. Only the honored few, would be allowed to do that! On Saturday, after a fajita lunch, there was a photo session, and all the while, lots of laughter and stories could be heard.

After a brief rest, the honorees and a few others were invited up on stage to reminisce about the 'good 'ole days' of the wild west. This was the real deal, mind you, from the men that lived and worked in those times. Stories that were passed along, so that others would understand and appreciate the pioneers of those days so long ago.....A chuckwagon dinner and finally the awards, highlighted and completed the wonderful weekend!
This honor is bestowed upon those who represent what it means to be a true, honorable and well-respected cowman, such as the late Foy Proctor. As many would (and did) attest, Foy Proctor was a 'cowman's cowman'. This year the Board of Directors of the Nita Stewart Haley Library and History Center nominated and voted in six honorees to receive this high honor.
Those inducted and receiving the Foy Proctor Memorial "Cowman's Award of Honor" for 2008 were:
Honorees left to right are Ray Snead (Dalhart, TX); Kenny Smith (Hobbs, N.M.);Doug Fernandes (Pecos, TX); Byron Fort (Tatum, N.M.); Larry Fernandes (Kermit, TX); Melvin Cotten (Andrews, TX)
Under a full harvest moon - what a night!
It will be a Western Winter Wedding, and Rehearsal Dinner for this West Texas couple! Another exciting event is in the works - You won't want to miss it!
